After 38 years of providing quality local produce for the people of Glossop, Roy and Lisa Green are finally able to retire, having agreed to sell their business at 10 High Street West to Pearsons Butchers.
Pearsons, who have a shop in Ashton-under-Lyne, will take over the running of the Glossop butchers in the next few weeks.
High Peak TV spoke to Roy and Lisa, who thanked the people of Glossop for many years of custom, and friendship.​Roy also introduced us to Sam Pearson, who will be the new manager soon.
We would like to thank Roy and Lisa for being such a big part of the community, and wish them both a long and happy retirement.

The Bureau, Glossop's Community wellbeing charity, seeks volunteer drivers and befrienders

The Bureau,, on Henry Street in Glossop, works with the belief that all members of the community will have both support needs of their own and the capacity to support others at various times in their lives – in some cases simultaneously. They identify and link together community needs and solutions to enable people to live independently and improve the quality of life for local communities.
High Peak TV popped to Tesco to speak to Lucy Mallott, volunteer coordinator at The Bureau, who was there with a small team of volunteers, to promote their need for volunteer drivers and befrienders in the local area.
Lucy told us The Bureau doesn't just offer volunteering services, they also offer support to anyone who needs a helping hand.

Willow Wood Hospice open new shop in Glossop

The new shop, at 12 High Street West was opened by Mayor of the High Peak, Councillor Stewart Gardner, who praised the staff and volunteers who have worked so hard to make the move from their previous premises at 57 High Street West, before cutting the ribbon to let the queue of excited customers in to find some bargains.

Pauline Lunt, Head of Retail at Willow Wood Hospice, said: “We are always looking to improve our retail offering and we had outgrown our space in Glossop thanks to the fantastic support of the local community.
“In our new premises, we have an increased floor space and a greater high street presence.
“We wish to express our sincere thanks to local businesses who have supported us in getting the new shop up and running – including Colebarn Developments in Hadfield.”

Caroline Lillis, Glossop shop manager, added: “We are really excited to open our new Glossop shop, which is bigger and brighter with an extended range of items.”
​
The shop will be open seven days a week – from 9.30am to 4.30pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
​
You can contact the shop by calling 0161 669 4855 and keep an eye out on the community noticeboard in the shop for updates about the Hospice, its services and fundraising events.

Supporting the Hospice’s charity shops is just one way that people can make a difference to patients from the local community.

Permission granted for Lost Species Mural at Rock Mill Centre in New Mills

Permission has been granted by High Peak Borough Council for a "Lost Species" mural at the Rock Mill Centre in New Mills.
It is one of a number of projects that have been included in a bid for the High Peak Cultural Capital Fund.
Rock Mill Centre is a community and information centre that celebrates New Mills, providing a space for local community groups, information about the local area for residents and visitors, events and much more.
The mural will be painted by Stockport based artist Shaun Azrak, and will feature three animals, chosen from a list of ten endangered species provided by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, and voted for by over 680 members of the local community as the three species they'd like to see return to New Mills.
Volunteer treasurer of Rock Mill Centre, Toby Hardwick, contacted High Peak TV to tell us a bit about the planned mural, and to share news of a crowd funder they have set up to help fund the project.
The decision on the High Peak Cultural Capital Fund bid is due in June.
The other projects at Rock Mill Centre include further environmental displays: 'A river runs through it' is a painting of a healthy river that will spread throughout the floor of the Centre, 'Once & Future' is an animated map that shows local land use from 6000 BC to 2100 AD and 'Flowing Together' presents a story of New Mills and its rivers.

Davis Blank Furniss host quiz for The Bureau at Cask & Kitchen in Glossop

On Tuesday 21 May High Peak TV were invited to attend the Cask & Kitchen, Glossop, where a quiz night to raise funds for The Bureau, had been organised by Davis Blank Furniss Manchester & Glossop.
About ten teams turned up, made up of local businesses, Capstone Financial, Stepping Stones Asset Management, Midavlyn Mortgages and Indigo Accountancy as well as friends and clients of Davis Blank Furness.
The winning teams won wine, donated by Arthur Worsley Funeral Services. Gaz, who hosted, also donated a voucher as a prize.
We chatted to Kirsty Morbey from Davis Blank Furniss, Gaz Edwards from Cask & Kitchen and Lauren Moore from The Bureau.

Hollingworth Festival on the Green

On Saturday 18 May, High Peak TV took the bus from Glossop to Hollingworth Festival on the Green to check out all the amazing activities for all the family, including One-Adventure Climb Wall & Inflatable Axe Throwing, Pony Patch Pony Rides, Wriggly Roadshow, Circus Skills & Bubble Station and Ladybird Facepainting.
Drumroots Ltd Drumming Workshop provided the beat, while Traditional Fairground Co. provided a selection of vintage games.
The sun was out and visitors came in their droves to enjoy 36 artisan stalls, various workshops, a classic car show from the High Peak Classic Car Group and even a dog show run by the RSPCA.
We tracked down festival organiser Verity James from The Friends of Hollingworth to ask her how she thought the day was going.

Souvenir programmes are now on sale for Glossop Heritage weekend 2024.
Designed and produced by High Peak Creative, the programme contains everything you need to know about the upcoming event in Glossop, and costs just £2 - a bargain for a beautifully printed keepsake.
High Peak TV had a brief chat with Paul Hitchen from the Heritage Weekend committee, who told us he would be selling the programmes at Norfolk Square on Fridays and Saturdays leading up to the event, which runs from Friday 30 May to Sunday 2 June in Glossop in the High Peak.
Paul told us the programmes are also available from local shops such as All in the Buff, Embellish, Roy Green's Quality Family Butchers Glossop, J W Mettrick & Son Ltd (Mettrick's Butchers), Dark Peak Books & Gifts and Nancy’s Nest, to name just a few.
Money raised by the programme will go towards the cost of the event, which is run by volunteers and is free to attend.

Extra Time UK are a Community Interest Company who help, train and support older people wanting to return to work.
They want to re-ignite people's ability to contribute to the wider community through employment, volunteering and improved wellbeing.
They say the UK is facing a significant labour shortage and has an
ageing population and they believe older people still have plenty to offer!
High Peak TV spoke to Mary Jessop and Ed Kelly, who wanted to tell us about their upcoming courses at the Peveril Suite at Glossop Business Centre starting 16 May.
They explained that working can improve mental wellbeing, counter loneliness, improve lives and supplement income.
They also told us about a surprise donation from Dame Judi Dench, who says "retired is the rudest word in my dictionary".

VIDEO: Hacienda fundraiser for Gamesley Community Centre at The Globe, Glossop

High Peak TV were at The Globe in Glossop last Friday night, to hear Cheryl Spilsbury creating a night of Hacienda filled music, fun and dance.
The evening was organised to raise funds for The Hangout Club, who's future hangs in the balance after the Community Centre they call home is set to be closed by Derbyshire County Council at the end of June.
Campaigners for Gamesley Community Centre have already managed to secure a three month extension to the closure notice, which was originally set for the end of March - only six weeks after the decision to close the building was announced.
But the residents of Gamesley are still optimistic they can save their centre. A group of community group leaders has been established and they are to trying to work together, with the council, to buy the building and keep it open for community use.
We spoke to George Street Community Bookshop owner Steve Roberts, who opened the show with some original songs on acoustic guitar before Cheryl Spilsbury took over to DJ the rest of the evening with a selection of 90's dance anthems.
Steve told us he was supporting the campaign because it's important for the community to have a place to get together and "just be friends with each other" and to have a space that's "not purely somewhere you go to buy something, somewhere that's just good for the community."
We also spoke to Cheryl, who told us that Gamesley was "like a derelict estate. You're watching things go one at a time - basically we've only got the community centre left."

VIDEO: What next for Gamesley Community Centre? Short interview with Mike Greenwood

High Peak TV spoke to local business owner and engineer Mike Greenwood, who has returned from building a community centre in Kenya, to Gamesley after hearing news of the imminent closure of it's vital community centre.
Mike told us he was making a business plan to make the community centre profitable, and explained that he is hoping to get a community group together who could continue to operate a thriving community centre in Gamesley.

Last night High Peak TV thoroughly enjoyed 50 Years of Otway & Barrett - a fundraiser for Glossop Mountain Rescue Team hosted by Demento66 at the Partington Theatre in Glossop.
The evening began with an introduction from Claire Theaker, who is part of local not-for-profit events team Demento66. She welcomed the audience and spoke briefly about an incident when she required assistance from mountain rescue after a friend suffered an injury while they were walking in the Peak District.
After her experience she decided with the rest of D66 to organise a fundraising event to support our local Glossop Mountain Rescue Team, who make themselves available 24/7, 365 days a year to locate and rescue the lost and injured in the High Peak, in all weather conditions.
Support from the community was overwhelming. The event was sold out and the capacity audience were treated to a night of fun and stage antics from cult pop legends John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett, who did the show as part of their 50th anniversary tour - 50 years of Otway & Barrett - Half a Sentry - an evening of musical madness involving wah wah wheelie-bins and Bagpuss bagpipes among a selection of improvised home-made musical instruments, and their comedy interactions onstage were hilarious, with delivery and timing it takes half a century to craft.
After the show Otway & Barrett mingled with guests in the bar run by Cask & Kitchen, signing autographs and posing for selfies with delighted attendees
The evening raised £1000 in ticket sales alone for Glossop Mountain Rescue Team.

VIDEO: Cask & Kitchen, Glossop - short interview with Gaz Edwards

High Peak TV rocked up at the Cask & Kitchen, Glossop on Friday evening as they opened up for the first time in their new location on Norfolk Square.
Their original building, just a stone's throw away on Henry Street, opened back in 2018 as a place with a familiar, comfortable feel of a “local pub” alongside an excellent contemporary food and drink selection.
The new location in the old Coop building (previously Square West) is larger than the old site, with space for outside seating and room inside for live music.
While we there we spoke to co-owner Gaz Edwards who told us he was looking forward to greeting old and new customers and explained the new "more stable" menu offered a greater variety of choice of food and drinks.
As well as the new location, the Cask & Kitchen run the bar at the historic Partington Players Theatre across Norfolk Square. They are also proud supporters of Reuben's Retreat, a local charity that supports families with complexly poorly children and families of child loss.

High Peak TV filmed a short interview with Duncan Wright, Chair of Glossop Creative Trust, about a website - whatsoninglossop.com - designed to list all arts, music, theatre, film and any other live events happening in Glossop.
Duncan hopes it will be the place to go to search for and discover live art events in Glossop by time and date, or by venue. Upcoming events at featured local venues (The Globe, Crystal Ballroom, Partington Players Theatre and, of course Demento66 & The Commercial) will be updated on a weekly basis, however there are many other great venues and gigs in Glossop, so anyone putting on a live show in the town will be able to add the event to the site themselves, either by registering and posting the details, or by contacting the site who would be more than happy to list it on their behalf.
